International Governments are Afraid of the Internet.

It’s quite simple the international governmental community is afraid of what the internet has become, which is why control measures continue to clamp down on the internet. The freedom of speech has never been that big of a deal as people who would speak out against governments never had that big of an audience. The media could merely ignore people with opinions that conflicted with the status quo. Now those people speaking out have a platform via the internet. Through social networking the ability for people to share these ideas and articles has greatly expanded. One of the greatest things is that people can share ideas internationally within seconds to a vast audience whatever that opinion or idea may be. It changes world perspective as people now have access to the perspective of the rest of the world rather than the isolated nationalist view. The world is becoming a tighter international community via the internet. This is why things like

• Allow foreign phone companies to charge fees for “international” Internet traffic, perhaps even on a “per-click” basis for certain Web destinations, with the goal of generating revenue for state-owned phone companies and government treasuries;

and

• Regulate international mobile roaming rates and practices.

are so detrimental to what the internet has become and what it is capable of. The Arab Spring, protests in Russia, and the occupy movement have shown the power of the internet to make grassroots movements more capable than ever. This is why governments are scared of what the internet has become. This is why internet regulation has become such an increasingly talked about topic. This is why internet regulation must be stopped.
